Lab Testing Q&A

What are standard lab tests?

Lab tests allow the team to evaluate your health by looking closely at your tissues, blood, and urine.

A urinalysis can show glucose in your urine and blood or signs of dehydration. Blood tests are also prevalent and include the following tests:

  • Complete blood count
  • Electrolyte panel
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel
  • Basic metabolic panel
  • Thyroid function
  • Cancer screenings
  • Autoimmune markers

The team can order several blood tests to get an overall picture of your health.

How are lab tests obtained?

The type of lab test you need dictates how the practice obtains the sample. For example, if you need a blood test, the team draws vials of blood from your arm or hand.

If you require a urinalysis or urine drug test, a team member provides you with a sterile cup and advises you on giving a clean urine sample for the most accurate results.

A COVID-19 screening may require a nasal swab that the practice can collect or advise you on collection to protect your health and the health of everyone in the practice.

When do you need a lab test?

The team obtains lab tests to evaluate your health and diagnose some medical issues. Other reasons you may need a lab test include:

  • Monitor disease progression
  • Make a treatment plan
  • Evaluate your response to treatments
  • Identify any changes in your health
  • Diagnose chronic disease

Once the team acquires your lab test, they evaluate it in-house for fast and accurate results. In some circumstances, they may need to send the lab test out for specific testing that isn’t performed onsite.

Does anything affect lab testing?

A lab test is only as good as the person giving the sample and the accuracy of the collection method. Various factors may affect your results, including the following:

  • Sex
  • Age
  • Medications
  • Certain foods
  • General health
  • Lab techniques
  • Medical history

Lab results are also affected by your ability to follow preparation instructions. The practice provides these instructions before your lab test to ensure accurate results.

The practice is proud to have Sonora Quest lab services onsite to provide every patient with a convenient and efficient option for lab tests.
